We’ve had a bumper crop of sugar snap peas this summer!!
(P.S. Did you know sugar snap peas are cross between garden peas and snow peas??)
Although pulling peas straight of the vine and snacking on them is a favorite summer treat, we’ve discovered that grilled snap peas make a fantastic and easy keto, paleo, Whole30, and vegan side dish or appetizer.
The only downside to grilled sugar snap peas?
Sometimes a pea pod or 3 falls through the grates of your grill. 🙁
Otherwise, grilling snap peas is fun and easy — perfect for a side dish with grilled burgers, steaks, fish, or chicken or veggie burgers.
Recipe FAQs & Ingredient Subs
Don’t you have to shell the peas?
Nope! The pea pods are actually edible — and naturally sweet! It would be impossible to get grill marks on shelled peas. They’re too small.
But, grilling the whole snap pea is a cinch and a great way to use up the entire pea!
Can I use snow peas?
Absolutely! Fresh snow peas can be grilled just like sugar snap peas.
What’s the best cooking spray to use?
I avoid ALL vegetable oils (canola, sunflower, safflower, peanut). More nourishing options for cooking sprays are avocado oil, olive oil, and coconut oil. I buy my cooking spray from Thrive Market.
What kind of grill do you have?
We have a Weber propane grill that has been going strong for 16 years now! I bought it for my husband’s first Father’s Day, and we still love it! If you use a charcoal grill or other type of grill, it will still work for these grilled peas!
If serving as an appetizer, should I make a dip?
These grilled peas are salty-sweet on their own, so we eat them as-is. But, a yummy dip is never a bad idea!
Try my Avocado Oil Buffalo Ranch! Or, some coconut aminos or traditionally fermented soy sauce would also do the trick.
How to Grill Sugar Snap Peas
Got some peas, your favorite cooking spray, and a bit of salt?
That’s all it takes to grill sugar snap peas!
Lay the peas out on a cutting board or baking sheet. First, lightly spray one side with cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt, if desired.
Next, lay the oiled side of the peas down on the grates of your grill and cook about 5 minutes, or until the grill marks start to show. Give the second side a quick spritz of oil and a sprinkle of salt.
Flip the peas over and cook the second side until you get those amazing char marks.
That’s it!
