It’s amazing what one will do to recover from hormone imbalances like HPA axis dysfunction…
Crazy things — like therapy, taking quality supplements, quitting sugar and coffee, and going to bed at a decent hour.
It’s been 7 years since I quit coffee, and I’m happy to say I don’t miss it at all. 🙂
While there are definite benefits to coffee, such as powerful antioxidants, the side effects of caffeine far outweigh any benefits for me. (Read: Is Coffee Good For You? + The Truth About Caffeine)
Why I Quit Coffee
After suffering from insomnia, heart palpitations, anxiety, and PMS for years, something had to give. I was exhausted!
During this time, I learned about HPA axis dysfunction (formerly known as “adrenal fatigue”). I knew that my morning cups of coffee were contributing to the anxiety, heart palpitations, and sleeplessness I experienced.
Unknowingly, I relied on coffee each day to give me the boost I needed to get going because my natural energy was all but gone. My gas tank was getting emptier and emptier. Soon, 1 cup each morning wasn’t enough.
Before long, I was sipping on half a pot of coffee (and no breakfast) from 8am until lunch time every, single day.
Folks, it is a huge mistake to drink nothing but coffee for breakfast and expect no long- or short-term side effects. It feels good for a while, but it eventually catches up to you.
And, when it does?
It takes a very, very long time for the body to recover.
Coffee and caffeine weren’t the only causes of my hormone imbalances, however cutting them out of my life was a big step toward recovery.
(Cutting sugar out of my life was another huge step, and I now use this DIY Sugar Alternative.)
Now, I prefer my coffee another way — up my bum in healing, liver-detoxifying coffee enemas!
Is Caffeine a Drug?
We, unfortunately, live in a culture that glorifies, pushes, and is — dare I say? — addicted to the stuff.
Some of our lives literally revolve around coffee. We plan work meetings around it, we meet at coffee shops for socializing and business, and we post about our trips to coffee shops on social media.
I’m over here, waving my red flag, trying to get your attention: all that coffee isn’t serving your body!
Caffeine is the most widely used chemical stimulant in the world. Yes, that’s right… it’s a drug. And a very addictive one at that. Caffeine has the ability to do what many substances cannot — cross the blood-brain barrier.
Our brains produce a neurotransmitter called adenosine to protect us against energy depletion. As adenosine accumulates in the body throughout the day, it binds to the adenosine receptors in the brain. When enough adenosine receptors have their adenosine, brain activity decreases and we get sleepy.
Caffeine competes with adenosine, effectively binding to, but not activating, the adenosine receptors. This prevents sleepiness and activates other neurotransmitters — the kind that give you a burst of energy and cause you to stay awake.

You’ve probably guessed where this is going…
Over time, with all your adenosine receptors occupied but not actually working, you’re left with symptoms like anxiety, nervousness, jitteriness, heart palpitations, and insomnia.
Maybe you don’t care about adenosine receptors. Maybe you’ll even tell me that you don’t need coffee to function; it’s just something you love.
After much research and listening to my intuition, I’ve realized that there are a lot of ways to justify keeping something (or someone) in our lives. If we feel we have to justify it at all… well, there’s the key.
I’ve found that our resistance usually reveals the very thing we need to do, but don’t want to do. Wherever your resistance is, that’s what you need to lean into. Trust me. <3

How neat! This is my favorite way to enjoy it!
An avid coffee lover for many years, I too had to relinquish coffee due to health reasons. Dandy Blend is wonderful! and I love this recipe. A delicious and healthy treat. Starbucks who?!!:-)
Thank you, Andrea! I haven’t visited a Starbucks in years! Think of all the money I’m saving! 😉
How much is a sleeve of Dandy Blend. I have a big bag. Is a sleeve one serving from the info on the bag? That would be 1 tsp. I realize I can add more if it’s not strong enough, I was just wondering.
Hi Janet, yes 1 sleeve is 1 teaspoon. So this recipe uses 2 sleeves, or 2 teaspoons.
