How about a hot drink that’s perfect for a chilly winter day that’s NOT hot chocolate?
I mean, I love hot chocolate just as much as the next person, but sometimes I want something different, ya know?
My peeps adore hot drinks, cold days, and (surprise, surprise) Harry Potter.
So when they came in from an afternoon of playing in the snow, hands frozen solid, they asked in unison,
“Can you make us some Butter Beer?!”
Why, of course I can!
(Let me just figure out how to do that without needing to run to the store and buy 14 extra ingredients that we don’t have… LOL)
What exactly is Butter Beer?
We first hear of Butter Beer in book 3, Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Unfortunately, J.K. Rowling doesn’t give us an actual recipe, so it’s really our best guess.
I’ve even combed through many of the Harry Potter fan cookbooks at Barnes & Noble, searching for the “real” butter beer recipe.
So really, it’s anyone’s guess.
This popular wizard’s beverage is said to taste very much like butterscotch, but not as sickly sweet. You can tell by reading about it and seeing it on the movies that butter beer is a cozy, comforting, creamy beverage.
We think it is even better than hot cocoa and a must-have when curling up on the couch for a Harry Potter movie marathon!
Ingredients in this Nourishing Harry Potter Butter Beer + a dairy-free option!
What’s butter beer without, uh, butter??? I suppose it’s meant to have butterscotch, but Real Food butterscotch is an elusive magical unicorn. 😉
So, we go for grass-fed butter… and LOTS of it! (Salted, grass-fed KerryGold butter is our pick, and its yellow color indicates how high it is in fat-soluble vitamins, like K2!)
If you need to be dairy-free, use ghee and add a couple of large pinches of salt.
For loads of fat-soluble vitamins, I also use raw milk.
You can use any type of milk you like — cow, goat, or dairy-free milk like coconut, almond, or cashew milk.
Steer clear of sweetened cartons of dairy-free milk, however. Just go for plain, and ideally, homemade! (Here’s how to make your own cashew milk.)
I’ve made this with raw milk and with homemade coconut milk — with both giving excellent results and very similar flavors.
To add protein and thickness, I add 1 scoop of grass-fed collagen to each mug. (<– Use my readers-only coupon code ALLTHETHINGS to save 10%!)
This just adds another layer of nourishment and health benefits to this yummy Harry Potter Butter Beer. (My guess is that Hogwart’s does not provide collagen to its students.) 😉
For sweetener, I need a caramel-y, buttery flavor, so I go for coconut sugar. This lower-glycemic sweetener is full of minerals and the flavor is unbeatable. The combination of butter + coconut sugar creates a butterscotch-type flavor for this nourishing Harry Potter Butter Beer!
How To Make Nourishing Non-Alcoholic Butter Beer
In a medium-size saucepan, melt butter (or ghee). Then, whisk in the coconut sugar. Keep whisking until it dissolves and forms an almost paste-like consistency.
Then, slowly add your milk of choice, whisking constantly.
As soon as the milk is steaming hot, but not simmering, remove from the heat and stir in vanilla and a bit of cinnamon.
If you’re serving all of your Butter Beer right away, add 3 to 4 scoops of collagen to the pot and whisk before serving. Or, each person can add collagen to her own mug, if desired.
Make sure to serve your non-alcoholic Butter Beer while curled up on the couch to watch the movies or read the books together. This butter beer is a special family tradition that always puts a smile on our faces and fills our tummies with something nourishing and sweet!

- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. When it's totally melted and bubbling a bit, whisk in the coconut sugar, stirring constantly.
- This will begin to make a caramel-like mixture. Just keep whisking it until the sugar granules are dissolved.
Slowly -- and I do mean SLOWLY -- pour in the milk.
- Continue whisking until the milk steams. Don't bring it to a boil.
- Remove from the heat and whisk in vanilla and cinnamon.
Serve immediately, preferably while watching one of the Harry Potter movies!
