Aquatic Greens Lemonade: a Chlorella & Spirulina Liver Support Drink
This Aquatic Greens Lemonade is a tasty, sugar-free way to support and gently detoxify your liver from heavy metals, pesticides, and toxins with 2 of nature’s most beautiful superfoods: spirulina and chlorella! It’s a Chlorella and Spirulina Liver Support Drink with just 4 ingredients!
Don’t you just love it when the foods that support and nourish your body are also super yummy?
You wouldn’t think that a spirulina and chlorella powder would be all that exciting.
In fact, you might think it would probably taste like grass… errrr, algae. Because that’s what it is.
It’s one of those mystery powders that you’d likely try hiding in a smoothie, begging to your kids to drink it with the famous and familiar words, “But you can’t even taste it!”
Been there. Said that. 37,648 times.
Aquatic Greens Lemonade
I’m so excited to share this Spirulina and Chlorella Liver Support Drink recipe with you.
Well, we call it Aquatic Greens Lemonade in our house, but it’s made with spirulina and chlorella and it does support your liver. So, it gets the honor of 2 titles. 😉
I came up with this recipe as a way to support and detox my liver while I take anti-anxiety meds. Liver support is a big part of gut health, which I am trying to maintain with all my heart and soul.
It is a dark green drink, so I can understand if you get some resistance. My kids are so used to me putting weird stuff in all our food, they don’t even hesitate now.
The lemonade part might sell it for you, though. It is really lemon-y. And, stevia makes it sweet without adding any sugar at all.
The Aquatic Greens gives it a “Spring-y” flavor, kinda like the fresh, green smell of the earth after it rains. But that might make you think it tastes like dirt, and it definitely does not.
Try Aquatic Greens Lemonade. It’s really tasty!
Bonus: My teenagers love it.
But first… some pertinent information.
What are Aquatic Greens?
Specifically, spirulina and chlorella. But, my friends at Perfect Supplements have combined them into one, convenient container with a handy scoop!
Aquatic Greens is a 50/50 blend of spirulina and chlorella — pure, whole food, fair trade, USDA certified organic. <– Save 10% with my discount code ALLTHETHINGS!
Even more specifically…
Spirulina is a spiral-shaped, blue-green algae that grows in warm, fresh water ponds. As a complete protein, it boasts over 100 nutrients, including:
- lots of B12
- iron
- potassium
- calcium
- magnesium
- all 8 essential amino acids
- gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) — a brain-healthy fatty acid that also occurs in breastmilk
Moving onto chlorella…
Chlorella is a green single-cell micro alga that grows naturally in fresh water. It gets its name from its very high concentration of Chlorophyll.
It boasts:
- large amounts of Vitamin A
- B12
- iron
- copper
- zinc
Chlorella is also a master detoxifier — binding to heavy metals, pesticides, and other wastes (all of which like to hide out in the liver), then escorting them out of the body.
Perfect Aquatic Greens contains “broken cell wall” chlorella — making the nutrients more easily digestible and bio-available.
The Benefits of Perfect Aquatic Greens
Happily, Perfect Aquatic Greens has organic certification, tests showing no heavy metals in the spirulina or chlorella, and nutritional properties analysis.
This is clean, high quality stuff, y’all. (Did I mention you can save 10% on Aquatic Greens with my discount code ALLTHETHINGS?!)
As if all that aforementioned stuff wasn’t enough, Aquatic Greens have the ability to…
- maintain liver health
- maintain healthy blood sugar levels
- improve and prevent anemia
- prevent and improve body odor and bad breath
- relieve constipation
For the purposes of this post and recipe for my Chlorella & Spirulina Liver Support Drink (aka Aquatic Greens Lemonade), I want to focus on the liver health benefits!
Why Your Liver Loves Spirulina & Chlorella
Did you know that your liver is the only organ capable of natural regeneration? Even if 75% of your liver is gone, the remaining 25% can regenerate into a whole, new liver (source)!
So, when you’re eating to support your liver, think GREEN…
- leafy greens
- avocado
- celery
- green veggies, like cucumber, broccoli, and bell peppers
- green tea
- spirulina
- chlorella
- foods like beets, lemons, turmeric, and ginger are also liver-lovers
There is some evidence to to suggest that the antioxidants such as selenium, chlorophyll, carotein and Vitmains E and C in spirulina can help protect against fatty liver damage. Spirulina appears to be effective in reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDL-C (good cholesterol). In other words, spirulina serves to protect our liver from the consequences of a high fat, cholesterol and alchohol diet. […] Spirulina also contains sulphur bearing amino acids such as cysteine and methionine which help the liver detoxify poisons such as carbon tetrachloride in the phase II detoxification pathway. (Source.)
As heavy metal detoxifiers — and livers are typically loaded with heavy metals — spirulina and chlorella bind to metals like mercury and arsenic and escort them out via the kidneys, urine, and feces.
Chlorella aids in removing toxins that are neutralized in the liver and delivered to the GI tract through the bile. In the GI tract, chlorella helps to further bind the toxins in the colon for elimination through the stool. This binding activity helps to prevent the toxins from re-entering the bloodstream. My Aquatic Greens Lemonade is a fantastically tasty way to deliver these super-nutrients and detoxifying benefits to your liver!
About this Chlorella and Spirulina Liver Support Drink
I struggle with anxiety and mental illness and use anti-anxiety medications for now — which can be very hard on the liver.
Wanting to support my body in the best ways possible — without losing my mind with complicated regimens — I learned about spirulina’s and chlorella’s amazingly supportive liver benefits and decided I needed an easy way to incorporate them into my lifestyle.
I’ve already made a smoothie — my Everything Smoothie — that uses Aquatic Greens. But, I’m not always in the mood for a smoothie. Sometimes, especially on a warm spring or summer day, I just want a cold, refreshing drink.
Truly, I thought drinking spirulina and chlorella in this way would be gross — like it would taste grassy or something. Totally wrong!
Mixed with lemon and a bit of stevia, the taste is like earthy lemonade. And I mean “earthy” in a good way here, not “it tastes like grass and dirt”! 😉
I’ve even got my teenagers drinking these. And friends, Momma is happy about that! With their changing hormones, teenagers need lots of liver support too.

Then, squeeze in the juice of a whole lemon, and add 1/32 teaspoon stevia (or more to taste).
Whisk or use a small milk frother to combine the Aquatic Greens, lemon juice, and stevia.

Hello,
I was wondering if you read that vitamin C should absolutely not to be mixed with chlorella at least 3hrs, because it releases the toxins that chlorella collected back to your system? I am just having hard time to figure out any drink, except of water, to drink my chlorella powder in, first thing in the morning, as it should not be taken close to any caffeine either at least 1hr (coffee, tea…) thanks, julia
No, Julia, I haven’t read that. If you have concerns about supplements/foods, you should direct them to your practitioner. 🙂
