That’s what this smoothie is for me…
Several months ago, my naturopath asked me to do a 2-week cleanse that involved eating certain amounts of certain grains, meats, and vegetables. Over the first 6 days, I ate quinoa or brown rice with chicken or fish and whatever veggies I wanted. During that time, one meal per day, then two, got replaced with a shake.
The shake included berries, flax seeds, dairy-free protein powder, and a LOT of fish oil, but it was meant to replace a meal, so it had to be a big, hearty, shake.
Since I cannot follow a recipe exactly, of course I tweaked the recipe. The basic ingredients are still there — the berries, flax seeds, protein powder, and fish oil — but there are a few more really healthy add-ins that I believe take this smoothie to a new level.
Now, because it’s absolutely loaded with all the nourishing things, I affectionately call it The Everything Smoothie!
Ingredients In All The Nourishing Things’ Everything Smoothie
Let’s start with the base ingredients:
- berries — low-glycemic, blood sugar-friendly, full of fiber and antioxidants
- dairy-free protein powder — I chose to use Perfect Plant Protein Powder rather than all the other vegan protein powder options because of the quality of ingredients, it’s soy-free, medicinal mushrooms, probiotics, and nothing is isolated, concentrated, or otherwise processed in harmful ways.
- flax seeds — fiber to support healthy bowel movements, lots of Omega-3s, has hormone benefits
- fish oil — Omega-3s, fat-soluble vitamins
And now, the ingredients I added to make this amazing smoothie even BETTER:
- aquatic greens (spirulina and chlorella) — facilitates detox, extra complete protein
- Green Smoothie Pucks: steamed greens, like spinach or a spinach/arugula/kale mix or beet greens — extra greens (duh!), fiber, great for blood sugar balance, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, all the good things!
- kefir — protein and gut-healing probiotics (Use full-fat coconut milk if you’re dairy-free.)
- raw beets — supports the liver and facilitates detox, extra plant fiber for blood sugar balance
- amla berry powder — whole foods Vitamin C
- MCT oil — for a brain and metabolism boost of ketones
By the time I was finished making my nourishing changes to the shake, I had ended up with a whole new, amazingly delicious and filling Everything Smoothie!
I enjoy my Everything Smoothie every morning now! It’s filling enough that I can have one smoothie for breakfast and nothing else, and I stay satisfied until lunch time!
If I’m working out and need extra protein, I add a scoop of collagen to the mix for 10 additional grams of complete protein.
The Everything Smoothie is also an awesome way to keep a healthy habit while traveling. Recently, we visited family and friends back in Texas. I knew we’d be eating out a lot and eating a lot of things that are outside our normal diet, so I wanted to have something each day that nourished me and fed my body in spite of the restaurant and other processed foods I was eating.
So, I took my blender on the trip, along with the shelf-stable ingredients (like the flax seeds, aquatic greens, plant protein powder, and fish oil) with me. Then, when we arrived at our destination, I went to the store and bought greens, beets, kefir, and frozen berries.
Each morning, I had The Everything Smoothie and felt really great about making such a healthy choice for myself — even if pizza, chips and salsa, and beer were in the cards later in the day!

Ingredients
- 4ouncesfiltered water
- 6ouncesfull-fatplain, grass-fed kefir (or coconut milk for dairy-free)
- 2 to 3chunks of beetpeeled
- 1tablespoonfish oil
- 1tablespoonflax seeds
- 1scoop Perfect Supplements Perfect Plant Protein Powder
- 1scoop Perfect Supplements Aquatic Greens Powder
- 1teaspoonamla powder
- 1cupfrozen strawberriesraspberries, or mixed berries

- liquid vanilla steviato taste

My kind of snack! I love a nutrient-filled smoothie!
This may be just what my body has been searching for! I really need to remember to add beats to my shopping list. Some mornings all I want is a smoothie but hold off because of the sugar from the fruit, but this, this I could do.
Yes, this is definitely blood sugar-friendly. I have not found that it raises mine at all!
