Keto Double Chocolate Cookie Dough (nut-free, vegan, flour-free)
Satisfy your chocolate cravings with this rich, dark Keto Double Chocolate Cookie Dough! This egg-free cookie dough recipe is also nut-free, vegan, and flour-free.
Man, oh man, have I been craving chocolate lately!
I have a pretty good idea why (hello, hormone imbalance), but y’all…
I can’t get enough!
When I say “chocolate”, I am not referring to a Hershey’s milk chocolate bar. I crave the good, dark stuff.
The expensive stuff. The Fair Trade-certified, organic, dairy-free, sugar-free stuff. 🙂
This Keto Double Chocolate Cookie dough is dark and rich, made with Fair Trade cacao powder, and is vegan and nut-free.
Let’s talk about Fair Trade raw, fermented cacao powder…
First, let’s get through some of the labels used to sell cocoa/cacao.
The most important label that chocolate can have, in my opinion, is Fair Trade certification. Because over 80% of the world’s cacao — which goes into making 100% of the world’s chocolate — is grown with unfair labor practices, including child slave labor, I won’t go near a cacao powder or chocolate that doesn’t have that Fair Trade symbol.
That symbol means the cacao was grown with fair labor practices, that farmers were paid a living wage for their work and their products, and that no child or forced labor was used.
If you wouldn’t put your own kids to work with a machete on a cacao plantation, then please always look for that Fair Trade certification. Look for it on chocolate bars, baking chocolate, chocolate chips, and cacao powder.
Second, there is a difference between cocoa powder and cacao powder. (Hint: cocoa is the highly processed version.)
If you’re going for antioxidant content and overall superfood-y-ness, then raw cacao powder is what you want.
But, under the umbrella of raw cacao, you’ve also got fermented and non-fermented raw cacao.
Raw, unfermented cacao has a high amount of phytic acid. Phytic acid binds to minerals like iron, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium, and prevents the body from absorbing them. Just like phytic acid is reduced in grains, beans, and nuts by soaking or sprouting them, it’s reduced in cacao through fermentation.
So, all the nutrition content — like high iron and magnesium and those antioxidants — is retained, but it’s much more available to your body when it’s fermented. We only use fermented raw cacao powder in our kitchen.

This Keto Double Chocolate Cookie Dough is egg-free!
To be honest, eating raw eggs in cookie dough doesn’t bother me one bit. But, I also regularly visit the chickens who lay my eggs. They roam happily outside, scratching, pecking, and eating a variety of plants, veggies, and bugs galore.
Still, to put everyone’s mind at ease, I’ve gone ahead and made this Keto Double Chocolate Cookie Dough egg-free.
No raw eggs means it’s 100% safe to eat AND you can store it at room temperature!
So, what’s the secret if there’s no eggs?
I used the clever “flax egg” trick: 1 tablespoons of ground flax seeds + 2 tablespoons of water. Mix together and let it sit for a few minutes, then mix into the cookie dough.
This Keto Double Chocolate Cookie Dough is also flour-free.
You read that right: no coconut flour or almond flour or any other flour.
The fermented raw cacao powder is the chocolate and the “flour”. Mixed with coconut oil, keto sweetener, and the flax “egg”, the cacao is enough. No flour required!
This is perfect for people who are limiting nuts (almond flour) or who want to use less nut flours altogether. (Here’s why I’m limiting my use of almond flour.)
Ingredient Subs
I try to provide as many subs as possible for y’all. It’s very important to me that my recipes be versatile to accommodate food sensitivities, preferences, or just so you can use what you already have instead of buying another speciality ingredient.
What can I sub for the Flax “Egg”?
You can use a raw, pastured egg, if you’re ok with eating raw egg. You will need to store any leftover cookie dough in the fridge, however.
If you don’t have any flax seed meal and don’t want to use a raw egg, you can sub ground chia seeds for the ground flax.
What can I sub for the coconut oil?
If you tolerate dairy, you can sub an equal amount of butter or ghee. If you use salted butter, you can omit the salt called for in the recipe — unless you like your chocolate with salt like me!
Do not use a liquid oil, like avocado oil, in place of coconut oil. It needs to be a fat that is soft at room temp, not liquid.

What can I sub for Dietz Sweet?
Dietz Sweet is my own DIY blend of erythritol and stevia that substitutes cup for cup like sugar. If you already use keto sweeteners, use your favorite granulated sweetener, such as Lakanto or Swerve.
If you’re not trying to stay low-carb, you can use an equal amount of coconut sugar. Keto or not, you do need to use a granulated sweetener, not maple syrup or honey.
What can I sub for Lily’s chocolate chips?
Lily’s chips are Fair Trade, organic, and keto-friendly. They’re my favorite chocolate chips!
If you’re not keto, you can use an equal amount of your favorite chocolate chips — preferably organic and Fair Trade certified, such as Pasha.
How to Make Keto Double Chocolate Cookie Dough
Do you love recipes that let you put everything into one bowl, mix, and call it a day?
I mean, you’re making cookie dough — not cookies — so I’m guessing you’re needing a chocolate fix N-O-W, right?
Ok, I got you.
First, you gotta make that flax “egg”. Combine ground flax seed with water in a small bowl, mix, and set aside.
While it gels, combine the coconut oil and sweetener in a mixing bowl. Use a stand mixer or hand mixer to cream them together.
Then, simply add the remaining ingredients, including the flax “egg”, and mix until it comes together as a cookie dough.
It’ll take less than 10 minutes from start to finish, and you can get on with satisfying that chocolate craving.
