Do you have a hoard of empty essential oils bottles?
Like, the bottles are empty (or, annoyingly, there’s a couple of drops that just. won’t. come. out!)? And, you don’t know what to do with them?
Toss them? Recycle them? How to use up every last drop so not a drop of those precious, expensive oils are wasted?
If you have ever wondered what to do with the teeny-tiny drops and vapors of essential oils that are left once you empty a bottle, wonder no more!
This easy trick will ensure your precious oils are good to the very last drop…literally!
How To Use Up Every Last Drop Of Your Essential Oils
Here’s what you need:
- Epsom salts
- Glass jar with lid (or any other container that’s handy — gallon buckets, etc.)
- empty (or as empty as you can make them) essential oils bottles with dispensers and lids
Here’s how to do it:
Begin by removing the lids from each bottle and set aside. Next, pop out the dispenser. You’ll probably have to use your fingernails to get under it, but it will come out. For each oil, you should have three parts: the lid, the dispenser, and the bottle.
Pour enough Epsom salts in the bottom of the glass jar to just cover the bottom. Add a few bottles, dispensers, and lids. Pour in a little more salts, then add more bottle parts.
Keep going until you’ve used all your bottle parts and filled the jar to the rim.
Cap the jar and gently shake and turn it over with your hands. This will allow the Epsom salts to get inside the EO bottles and absorb every last drop and aroma.
Allow your jar of Epsom salts sit for at least 24 hours, but you can leave the bottle parts in the jar of salts indefinitely.
When you’re ready to use those wonderfully scented bath salts, transfer the salts slowly into a clean jar, removing bottle pieces as you go. If you accidentally leave a dispenser in the salts, you’ll find it when you take a bath.
Add 1 to 2 cups of these aromatherapeutic, magnesium-rich, custom-scented Epsom salts to a hot bath and enjoy a relaxing soak!
It doesn’t matter if you have lots of different oils going in to your mix. There won’t be enough of any one oil to overpower the others, and it’s likely that you’ll have a nice mix of base, middle, and top notes blended into your Epsom salts. Each batch of bath salts will be different as you use and empty various essential oils!

For those that prefer a shower, the scented epsom salts is a great exfoliant.
Well, this is brilliant! Now I’m crying over the bottles I just threw out last week! Well, maybe the landfill will smell a little better?! But still, brilliant hack!
Awwww! Next time! Glad you like this trick!
Great idea! Can I mix oils together in this? I assume I can.
Thanks
You sure can, Sue! In the mix pictured, I had a well-rounded blend of frankincense, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, white fir, tea tree, and some Spark blends too! There is so little left that one smell doesn’t overpower another, and surprisingly, they all blended nicely together. Does that help?
Oh my word Lindsey this is brilliant! I JUST ran out of my lavender and it makes me so mad when I see that little bit at the bottom still waiting to be used. They’re expensive so we better use every single last drop right?
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! Glad this little tip was helpful!
LOVE this idea! I always refill my 5 ml ones like you do but I never knew how to get those last few drops out. Thanks Lindsey! This is seriously such an amazing tip!!!
Thanks, Katie Mae! I’m glad it’s helpful for you! It was one of those “DUH!” moments for me! LOL
