Nourishing Non-Alcoholic Harry Potter Butter Beer (with a dairy-free option!)
With gut-healing collagen + a dairy-free option, this nourishing, non-alcoholic Harry Potter Butter Beer might be better than what’s served at Hogwart’s! Enjoy this frothy, creamy, naturally sweetened, Paleo drink on chilly days, preferably while curled up with the family to read the books or a Harry Potter movie marathon!
How about a hot drink that’s perfect for a chilly winter day that’s NOT hot chocolate?
I mean, I love hot chocolate just as much as the next person, but sometimes I want something different, ya know?
My peeps adore hot drinks, cold days, and (surprise, surprise) Harry Potter.
So when they came in from an afternoon of playing in the snow, hands frozen solid, they asked in unison,
“Can you make us some Butter Beer?!”
Why, of course I can!
(Let me just figure out how to do that without needing to run to the store and buy 14 extra ingredients that we don’t have… LOL)
What exactly is Butter Beer?
We first hear of Butter Beer in book 3, Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Unfortunately, J.K. Rowling doesn’t give us an actual recipe, so it’s really our best guess.
I’ve even combed through many of the Harry Potter fan cookbooks at Barnes & Noble, searching for the “real” butter beer recipe.
So really, it’s anyone’s guess.
This popular wizard’s beverage is said to taste very much like butterscotch, but not as sickly sweet. You can tell by reading about it and seeing it on the movies that butter beer is a cozy, comforting, creamy beverage.
We think it is even better than hot cocoa and a must-have when curling up on the couch for a Harry Potter movie marathon!
Ingredients in this Nourishing Harry Potter Butter Beer + a dairy-free option!
What’s butter beer without, uh, butter??? I suppose it’s meant to have butterscotch, but Real Food butterscotch is an elusive magical unicorn. 😉
So, we go for grass-fed butter… and LOTS of it! (Salted, grass-fed KerryGold butter is our pick, and its yellow color indicates how high it is in fat-soluble vitamins, like K2!)
If you need to be dairy-free, use ghee and add a couple of large pinches of salt.
For loads of fat-soluble vitamins, I also use raw milk.
You can use any type of milk you like — cow, goat, or dairy-free milk like coconut, almond, or cashew milk.
Steer clear of sweetened cartons of dairy-free milk, however. Just go for plain, and ideally, homemade! (Here’s how to make your own cashew milk.)
I’ve made this with raw milk and with homemade coconut milk — with both giving excellent results and very similar flavors.
To add protein and thickness, I add 1 scoop of grass-fed collagen to each mug. (<– Use my readers-only coupon code ALLTHETHINGS to save 10%!)
This just adds another layer of nourishment and health benefits to this yummy Harry Potter Butter Beer. (My guess is that Hogwart’s does not provide collagen to its students.) 😉
For sweetener, I need a caramel-y, buttery flavor, so I go for coconut sugar. This lower-glycemic sweetener is full of minerals and the flavor is unbeatable. The combination of butter + coconut sugar creates a butterscotch-type flavor for this nourishing Harry Potter Butter Beer!
How To Make Nourishing Non-Alcoholic Butter Beer
In a medium-size saucepan, melt butter (or ghee). Then, whisk in the coconut sugar. Keep whisking until it dissolves and forms an almost paste-like consistency.
Then, slowly add your milk of choice, whisking constantly.
As soon as the milk is steaming hot, but not simmering, remove from the heat and stir in vanilla and a bit of cinnamon.
If you’re serving all of your Butter Beer right away, add 3 to 4 scoops of collagen to the pot and whisk before serving. Or, each person can add collagen to her own mug, if desired.
Make sure to serve your non-alcoholic Butter Beer while curled up on the couch to watch the movies or read the books together. This butter beer is a special family tradition that always puts a smile on our faces and fills our tummies with something nourishing and sweet!

Hey Jennifer, I recently updated and improved this recipe, and decided to leave the gelatin out. I just found it in the recipe, so I must’ve missed it when I updated. It’s fixed now! 🙂

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe!!! I’m reading Harry Potter to my oldest right now, we just started the 4th book and I told her you have a recipe for this. She’s so excited to try it.
HOW FUN!
Lindsey this recipe is so cool! I am such a Harry Potter fan, I would love to make my own butter beer 🙂
My nerdy Harry Potter fan boys would love this!
Did you say Harry Potter??? Ok I’m in!
This is so fun! I’ve never tried butter beer before, but I think I’ll definitely love this since it has butter in it!
I’m not a Harry Potter fan, but anything with 1/2 cup of butter in it sounds good to me!
I’m pretty sure butter = love when it comes to food! 🙂
This is so fun Lindsey! My oldest is just now started to ask to read Harry Potter as she hears friends at school talking about it – so I’m tucking this away for when she gets a chance to read it!
Fun! My kids have read and re-read the entire series countless times now! It’s definitely a favorite in our house! I know your daughter is going to LOVE it!
Yummy!!!!! This is so delicious.
This is so yummy! I cut the sugar in half and it was just right!
That awesome! Glad you loved it!
Can honey be substituted for the coconut sugar?
It could, Kathleen, but the coconut sugar is what gives the drink it’s signature caramel flavor.
This would be a large batch for me. Could you put in refrigerator and reheat as needed?
Yes, Vicki, I think that would be ok. If you use gelatin, it will gel in the fridge, which might make reheating difficult, but not impossible. Using collagen will eliminate this problem and should work fine!
I make nourishing versions of hot cocoa, egg nog, and chai tea lattes for my five young children, so it was great to see a recipe to change up the hot drink routine. I doubled the gelatin, but otherwise kept the recipe just as posted, and it was fantastic. My kids loved it and my husband liked it too (with a splash of rum in his 😉 ) Thanks for a great recipe!
We love our hot drinks this time of year too! I’m so glad you liked my drink enough to add it to your rotation! 🙂
