5 Unexpected Benefits of Coffee Enemas {for women!}
It’s no secret that I believe in the amazing benefits of coffee enemas.
Kind of a weird statement right out of the gate, right? 😉
No worries….I won’t be embarrassed if you won’t be, deal?
My Coffee Enema Story
The Hubs and I both had the desire to try coffee enemas after we watched the documentaries, The Beautiful Truth and The Gerson Miracle.
These films document an alternative cancer treatment known as the Gerson Therapy, which utilizes raw vegetable juice and coffee enemas. This therapy, which is illegal in the United States, has an astounding success rate — which is unfortunately not documented because U.S. doctors refuse to recognize, or even study, this treatment.
(That’s another rant for another day…)
Anyway, after The Hubs and I watched these films, we were super curious about coffee enemas. Could shooting coffee up your bum really detox the body so effectively as to cure not only cancer, but other degenerative diseases too?!
We both admit, however, that we weren’t curious enough to actually try them. Not then anyway…
Fast forward a couple of years.
I was having major gallbladder issues — as in The Hubs threatened to load me up and haul me to the ER the next time I had a gallbladder attack. Or he was going to remove it himself. Because y’all, gallbladder pain is THE WORST.
So I did some research and came across The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse by Andreas Moritz. And part of this cleanse was, you guessed it, coffee enemas.
There was no turning back.
I felt I was faced with an ultimatum: gallbladder removal or coffee enemas.
The choice was simple.
Fast forward another 2 years…
I’m still doing coffee enemas!
I also still have my gallbladder — which I’m happy to report is behaving much more nicely now.
I’ve seen firsthand the healing power that coffee enemas have had on my digestive system. No more gallbladder pain is just the tip of the iceberg.
This is totally gross but also totally normal: I’ve also cleared by body of parasites and gall stones I didn’t even know I had!
My colon had a lot of yucky old stuff in it that’s now gone too.
Coffee enemas have improved my energy levels and mental clarity.
In fact, I have not had one negative thing happen in my body as a result of performing coffee enemas. Not one!
Unexpected Benefits of Coffee Enemas For Women
Coffee enemas were supposed to help my gallbladder, my digestion, and my brain fog. I was expecting those things.
What I wasn’t expecting, however, were a few other side benefits.
1. Stronger Pelvic Floor Muscles.
Mommas, let’s have a heart to heart real quick. It is a fact of motherhood that, after the arrival of that blessed bundle of joy, the muscles that once allowed you to go hours without peeing no longer seem to do their job, am I right?
Sure, my postpartum bladder was a lot less bothersome than my pregnant bladder — meaning, I didn’t have to pee every 13 minutes.
But sneezing? Coughing? Laughing?
Those activities became a lot more challenging. Because I’d wet my pants without even realizing I had to go to begin with!
Will somebody please tell me I’m not alone in this??
Even YEARS after having my babies, I couldn’t jump on the trampoline or even go jogging without … ahem … leaking into my knickers.
Everyone says to do Kegel exercises, but seriously, who remembers or doesn’t feel slightly awkward about that?
I’ll be honest here: holding in coffee enemas for the first few weeks was challenging. But slowly, over time, it got easier and easier.
Coffee enemas require you to focus a lot on the lower area of your body, and that focus and concentration is what enables you to hold the liquid in your colon for 10-15 minutes at a time.
Bonus! That lower body concentration translates to your lady parts — and tones those muscles too! I could not make this stuff up, y’all.
I haven’t done Kegel exercises in my life, but I do put 30-40 minutes of focus into retaining a coffee enema everyday — which means my loose lady muscles are getting 30-40 minutes of strength training and toning every.single.day.
The result?
I can jog (except I don’t because I hate it, but I could hypothetically jog a 5K to my mailbox without tinkling on myself). I can jump on the trampoline with my kids and jump off with dry undies. And, I can even make it through the freezer section of Costco without needing to tinkle!
It’s glorious! And all because I kept at this coffee enema thing.
2. Super Clear Skin
I’ve always been pretty blessed in the facial skin department. I never dealt with severe acne on my face, and I can’t imagine how difficult that is.
I did have quite a lot of small zits on my back though — which is so not fun. And, every month, I would get 2-4 pimples on my face during the week before my period.
Guess what? Not anymore!
I have had maybe seven zits in the past two years. Maybe.
I believe coffee enemas have detoxed my body so well that I no longer have toxins escaping through my skin and causing breakouts. Because before coffee enemas? Back and face breakouts. Two years later? No back or face breakouts. And one zit every few months is way better than “normal” anyway!
If you eat really clean but still have skin issues, give coffee enemas a try for a few weeks. I bet it improves!
3. A Well-Hydrated Body
Coffee enemas = Water + Coffee.
The colon is very good at absorbing water.
This explains why bowel movements are often dry and hard in constipated folks and why drinking more water is always recommended if constipation is an issue — because the colon re-absorbs any remaining water in the feces if the body is dehydrated.
While drinking plenty of water-based liquids, such as herbal tea, bone broth, lemonade, and of course, water, is always the best way to stay hydrated, our bodies’ water requirements can fluctuate. You may not be drinking enough water and you don’t even realize it!
Sometimes, when doing a coffee enema, you won’t eliminate as much liquid as you put in to your colon.
This is no cause for concern, however. It simply means that your colon absorbed the water from the enema because you needed it!
Proper hydration is necessary for EVERYTHING: skin health, energy levels, mental clarity, proper digestion and elimination, kidney health, and more.
So although coffee enemas aren’t a replacement for drinking enough fluids, a side benefit of doing them is that any re-absorption of water means you’re better hydrated!
4. Relief from Menstrual Pain & Fatigue
I get my period every month, just like you. And just yours, it’s not a walk in the park (yet, it is better than it used to be!).
Although cleaning up my diet and reducing environmental toxins in my life helped the pain and discomfort of my monthlies tremendously, I still experience cramps, body aches, and tiredness.
I don’t take Tylenol, Advil, Midol, or anything else for relief.
I discovered pretty quickly that coffee enemas are amazing, all-natural pain relief — along with The Best Period Drink Ever and this PMS Smoothie.
The pain-reducing qualities of coffee enemas were discovered during World War I. Legend has it that a nurse accidentally poured coffee instead of water into a patient’s enema. When she gave it to him, the pain from his injuries subsided (source).
Another story says that coffee enemas were used during the war when morphine was in short supply (source).
Either way, I can personally testify to a coffee enema’s ability to reduce pain, discomfort, and fatigue during my period.
5. Peace & Quiet
I think this one’s pretty self-explanatory. I mean, bathroom business isn’t exactly a public event — unless, of course, you have children under the age of 5 running around, in which case, I applaud you, salute you, pray for you, and advise you to do coffee enemas while your hubby’s at home. 😉
You don’t have to be on a specific healing protocol, such as Nutritional Balancing or the Gerson Therapy, to do or benefit from coffee enemas. And if you choose to do them, you get to be alone, in peace and quiet, for at least 20 minutes!
Who doesn’t love the thought of that?
I think coffee enemas are wonderfully relaxing.
You can reasonably do any activity that you would do whilst laying in bed: read a book, catch up on social media, close your eyes, listen to soft music.
I love to take my iPad into the bathroom with me and use the time to watch an episode of whatever show I’m into. (Right now, it’s Call the Midwife on Netflix!)
I need alone time every day so I can be the best version of myself. I am able to be a better wife and mommy if I get that time. It doesn’t have to be long spans of time — which is why a coffee enema is the ultimate multi-tasker.
I am actively detoxing my liver, gallbladder, and colon while getting that time alone AND staying hydrated AND keeping my skin clear AND getting relief from fatigue AND toning my pelvic floor muscles.
How cool is that?!
UPDATE
I stopped daily coffee enemas in June of 2017, after over 2 years. My naturopath and I determined this was the right choice for me at the time — and not because of any negative side effects of the coffee enemas. Even after daily enemas for over 2 years, my normal bowel function returned in just a few days.
The main purpose for my doing coffee enemas was as part of a Nutritional Balancing program and for liver detox. I am no longer doing NB. Furthermore, my ND and I are supporting my liver function and detox through Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, homeopathics, and methylated B vitamins.
Though I am no longer doing daily enemas, I try to do at least 2 per month — per my ND’s instructions.
I am so thankful for the 2 years that I did coffee enemas. I truly believe they saved my gallbladder, rid my body of lots of toxins and parasites, and made me slow down and have some quiet time to myself every day. And, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!
Hi, I’ve been experiencing gallbladder pain and stumbled across your post while looking for remedies. I started doing IF and noticed my gallbladder pain has been worse. Do you think doing daily coffee enemas would help? Have you found any down side doing them daily? I know you said it’s been a few years since doing this.
Thanks!
I haven’t personally experienced any negative side effects when I did daily coffee enemas. I’m convinced they saved my gallbladder. If IF is making your gallbladder pain worse, perhaps that’s your body telling you IF isn’t for you at this time. 🙂
what do the stones look like?
They’re little green or yellow blobs.
I have been doing coffee enemas for over 3 months and I wish i had done it before. It is wonderful, even feelling yunger
Hello
Does enema helps with fibroids? thanks
Coffee enemas may help with pain from fibroids, but they will not get rid of fibroids, if that’s what you’re asking. Fibroids are caused by excess estrogen, so liver support is helpful in allowing your body to detox excess estrogen.
I have been doing coffee enemas for about 5 months. They are amazing!!! Super relaxing and I know I used to see parasites flush out when I first started them. They definitely DO help with uterine cramps and I will continue to do them until they don’t make sense to do them any more. They have changed my life and I am so glad that you wrote this article. I can confirm on everything that you wrote about!
Jen, that is AWESOME!!!
I have been doing coffee enemas for over two years I used to do them daily now I tried and do them every other day and I have gone through a. Of time in those two years wow I actually I’m going on my third year I’ve gone through a time where I stopped doing them because I was newly a mother and I found it difficult to fit in a coffee enema and postpartum time but I noticed an extreme difference in my body when I stopped I lost the function of my thyroid and as soon as I… Read more »
Hello sparkles,
Did you stop doing the enemas during your pregnancy and while trying to conceive? I take it that you didn’t do it while breastfeeding?
Hi Lindsey, thank you for the post. I’ve been looking for the effects of coffee enema in period cramps, so this is a great help. Do you see the results even if you don’t do the enema during your period or do you do the enemas during your period to help with the cramps? I’m trying to wean off pain killers during my period but I’m not sure if I should try the coffee enema during my period.
I have done coffee enemas during my period to ease cramps, and it is very effective. It might be a tad messy, especially if in the first couple of days of your cycle or if you’re a heavy bleeder. But, a few old towels should do the trick!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Do you flush with plain water enemas before and or after the coffee enema?
Nope, I only do the coffee enema.
Hi Lindsey, this is a great article and very informative
please can you let me know the doctor who you were working with
His information is on my contact page. Hope that helps!
Just started coffee enemas this week. Can’t wait to enjoy all the benefits! Found your site while searching what it might mean if one doesn’t eliminate as much as taken in. Was feeling a little anxious as I couldn’t find any information on this scenario until finding your post. Feeling relieved and looking forward to my next coffee. Thank you!
Good work! No worries if it doesn’t all come out. It just means your colon is absorbing the water to keep you hydrated. Try drinking more water before your enema next time.
My friend, a nurse frequently assists me with coffee enemas. I rather have them given than doing myself. Seems more workable. She was the one who introduced me to them explaining their benefits. Her ministrations include vitals (w/ rectal temp) which is used for determining body temp. It is removed, the (if “normal”) and the thermometer is re-inserted and left in my rectum while the “warm” coffee is administered, then thermometer is immediately removed and read after a mere infusion of the solution. Usually it’s about 102F. Anyway after the administering(about 1/2 of a 2 1/2 qt bag) I am… Read more »
I have been using coffee enema for almost 5 month, I lost 25 pounds that I struggled for years to lose. I do it every day if I can. I love it and it is not only good for my gut but it is also good for my skin my skin now has a special shine to it and it is much softer. Also enema is my time for myself to relax and take care of “me”. I am a big fan and a big supporter of coffee enema. No bad sad effects plus it did get rid of my… Read more »
Hello Lindsey I’ve just read so much conflicting info on daily coffee enemas and your article was definitely the most helpful. I was told by a biomagnetic energy practitioner that both my liver and kidneys are only functioning at about 30% Also that the bile from my gall bladder isn’t strong enough to properly help digest foods. No wonder I can’t lose weight and feel exhausted most of the time. Do daily coffee enemas work with bloating, gas and poor digestion? Also has anyone else experienced improved sleep from daily coffee enemas – THAT would be really great news! Also… Read more »
Hi Eugenie, I think you should work with another practitioner, personally. I am happy to give you info for mine if you are interested; he has worked long-distance with me for 7 years. Coffee enemas help with digestion by stimulating the gallbladder to release bile and also by gently cleansing the colon. It’s not electrolytes in your gut that need re-balancing; it’s the flora. You should be taking a couple of really good quality probiotics and also using prebiotics. You can learn more in this post: https://allthenourishingthings.com/5-must-have-supplements-for-basic-wellness/ As for your diet, it’s great that you’ve eliminated wheat and sugar, but… Read more »
Hi Lindsey, I’m doing enema for a month now. And yes, I feel all the positive side effect you mentioned above. But do you know someone who does enema everyday for years? I mean, I know you’ve done it for two years, but now you decrease your frequency. Would it be save to say, as long as we don’t have any issues, we can do it as long as we want to? And do you take any probiotic or mineral supplements to prevent any mineral deficiencies?
I actually rarely do a coffee enema now. I don’t need to any more. The body heals. I recently had a sonogram of my pelvis that included my gallbladder, and it was stone-free! If you aren’t having issues, then why do them daily? I did them daily because I was having health issues. But those don’t exist for me now, so I don’t need to do the enemas daily. Hope that helps!
I recently have tumours in my liver and pancreas. Also have a few gallstones. I’m on food combining diet, leaning towards to vegan. I combine it with coffee enema and juice therapy. I’m still on the 2nd month doing all that. Still new with all of this, still need to learn a lot. But glad to know that the body can eventually heal itself! Thx Lindsey!
Hi NAND, I have been doing coffee enemas for the last 5 years, twice a day and I put Himalayan salt in it to make sure my electrolytes are fine. I started doing them for detox and it has been a ritual for me and my husband. We both feel a lot better for it and have no issues. If I eat too many carbohydrates my enemas can be quite crappy and this keeps me in check.
Did you have colon pain? I feel like my colon is inflamed. Is this normal? Been doing daily for about 2 months.
No, I didn’t, but if you’re experiencing any sort of pain and you think it might be related to coffee enemas, please discontinue them and see your doctor.
I think it is more nausea and nervousness. I have had a dull headache for about 1-2 weeks. Is this from detoxing to much and to quickly? I noticed when I switched to the organic green coffee(from just organic regular coffee), that is when the nausea, nervousness and not sleeping well started. I had headaches on and off with the regular coffee. My system feels shaky and anxious. I think I will back off and let my system catch up. I am in NJ and I don’t have a naturopathic doctor. I have been struggling for years with stomach issues… Read more »
I can’t give medical advice, Laura, but it sounds like you need to seek out the help of a professional, perhaps a naturopath in another town or functional doctor who can treat you over the Internet. It’s possible your liver needs extra support, especially after the mold issue. You can read one of my latest blog posts to learn more about that: https://allthenourishingthings.com/ways-to-support-gut-health-while-taking-anti-anxiety-medication/
Also, we found out the the home I grew up in had a contaminated well and our farm house had serious mold issue.
I did forget to mention besides the amazing, healthful results of coffee enemas I mentioned in a previous post that it is important to do an enema series – one for cleansing, and sometimes recommended a second (but I usually skip this one if I feel I have eliminated enough waste from lower intestine (using colon tube) and go right to the coffee retention enema. I find everything I needed to know from this website with good products (I am not a part of this company, but simply recommend them for their advice, how to videos, and important, correct and… Read more »
Did you ever get sick when you first started doing these, due to the toxins leaving your body??
Definitely waves of nausea, but not sick. I never threw up. But the toxins exiting can be pretty intense.
I have just started doing coffee enemas, mostly because my immune system has been struggling for the last 3 years since I got giardia in Bali. I also felt that I was not properly detoxed after having amalgam fillings replaced. It was suggested to me to take 2 caps of activated carbon charcoal before I did the enema and them 2 once it was all done. So far I have had no signs of problem with toxins after several enemas but have seen a great shift in the old liver/gall bladder.
Wow that makes me worry I had a dentist drop amalgam down my throat and then told me to go get x-rays. To make sure it passed. I never did I just figured it passed sooner or later. Anyway I learned of coffee enema’s years and years ago and I just thought I would like to try them now but I am so sensitive to caffeine. I would probably have to lower the one or two teaspoons to a teaspoon or half teaspoon. I used to drink a 2 Litre A Day of Mountain Dew And never drink anything else… Read more »
