5 Unexpected Benefits of Coffee Enemas {for women!}
It’s no secret that I believe in the amazing benefits of coffee enemas.
Kind of a weird statement right out of the gate, right? 😉
No worries….I won’t be embarrassed if you won’t be, deal?
My Coffee Enema Story
The Hubs and I both had the desire to try coffee enemas after we watched the documentaries, The Beautiful Truth and The Gerson Miracle.
These films document an alternative cancer treatment known as the Gerson Therapy, which utilizes raw vegetable juice and coffee enemas. This therapy, which is illegal in the United States, has an astounding success rate — which is unfortunately not documented because U.S. doctors refuse to recognize, or even study, this treatment.
(That’s another rant for another day…)
Anyway, after The Hubs and I watched these films, we were super curious about coffee enemas. Could shooting coffee up your bum really detox the body so effectively as to cure not only cancer, but other degenerative diseases too?!
We both admit, however, that we weren’t curious enough to actually try them. Not then anyway…
Fast forward a couple of years.
I was having major gallbladder issues — as in The Hubs threatened to load me up and haul me to the ER the next time I had a gallbladder attack. Or he was going to remove it himself. Because y’all, gallbladder pain is THE WORST.
So I did some research and came across The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse by Andreas Moritz. And part of this cleanse was, you guessed it, coffee enemas.
There was no turning back.
I felt I was faced with an ultimatum: gallbladder removal or coffee enemas.
The choice was simple.
Fast forward another 2 years…
I’m still doing coffee enemas!
I also still have my gallbladder — which I’m happy to report is behaving much more nicely now.
I’ve seen firsthand the healing power that coffee enemas have had on my digestive system. No more gallbladder pain is just the tip of the iceberg.
This is totally gross but also totally normal: I’ve also cleared by body of parasites and gall stones I didn’t even know I had!
My colon had a lot of yucky old stuff in it that’s now gone too.
Coffee enemas have improved my energy levels and mental clarity.
In fact, I have not had one negative thing happen in my body as a result of performing coffee enemas. Not one!
Unexpected Benefits of Coffee Enemas For Women
Coffee enemas were supposed to help my gallbladder, my digestion, and my brain fog. I was expecting those things.
What I wasn’t expecting, however, were a few other side benefits.
1. Stronger Pelvic Floor Muscles.
Mommas, let’s have a heart to heart real quick. It is a fact of motherhood that, after the arrival of that blessed bundle of joy, the muscles that once allowed you to go hours without peeing no longer seem to do their job, am I right?
Sure, my postpartum bladder was a lot less bothersome than my pregnant bladder — meaning, I didn’t have to pee every 13 minutes.
But sneezing? Coughing? Laughing?
Those activities became a lot more challenging. Because I’d wet my pants without even realizing I had to go to begin with!
Will somebody please tell me I’m not alone in this??
Even YEARS after having my babies, I couldn’t jump on the trampoline or even go jogging without … ahem … leaking into my knickers.
Everyone says to do Kegel exercises, but seriously, who remembers or doesn’t feel slightly awkward about that?
I’ll be honest here: holding in coffee enemas for the first few weeks was challenging. But slowly, over time, it got easier and easier.
Coffee enemas require you to focus a lot on the lower area of your body, and that focus and concentration is what enables you to hold the liquid in your colon for 10-15 minutes at a time.
Bonus! That lower body concentration translates to your lady parts — and tones those muscles too! I could not make this stuff up, y’all.
I haven’t done Kegel exercises in my life, but I do put 30-40Â minutes of focus into retaining a coffee enema everyday — which means my loose lady muscles are getting 30-40 minutes of strength training and toning every.single.day.
The result?
I can jog (except I don’t because I hate it, but I could hypothetically jog a 5KÂ to my mailbox without tinkling on myself). I can jump on the trampoline with my kids and jump off with dry undies. And, I can even make it through the freezer section of Costco without needing to tinkle!
It’s glorious! And all because I kept at this coffee enema thing.
2. Super Clear Skin
I’ve always been pretty blessed in the facial skin department. I never dealt with severe acne on my face, and I can’t imagine how difficult that is.
I did have quite a lot of small zits on my back though — which is so not fun. And, every month, I would get 2-4 pimples on my face during the week before my period.
Guess what? Not anymore!
I have had maybe seven zits in the past two years. Maybe.
I believe coffee enemas have detoxed my body so well that I no longer have toxins escaping through my skin and causing breakouts. Because before coffee enemas? Back and face breakouts. Two years later? No back or face breakouts. And one zit every few months is way better than “normal” anyway!
If you eat really clean but still have skin issues, give coffee enemas a try for a few weeks. I bet it improves!
3. A Well-Hydrated Body
Coffee enemas = Water + Coffee.
The colon is very good at absorbing water.
This explains why bowel movements are often dry and hard in constipated folks and why drinking more water is always recommended if constipation is an issue — because the colon re-absorbs any remaining water in the feces if the body is dehydrated.
While drinking plenty of water-based liquids, such as herbal tea, bone broth, lemonade, and of course, water, is always the best way to stay hydrated, our bodies’ water requirements can fluctuate. You may not be drinking enough water and you don’t even realize it!
Sometimes, when doing a coffee enema, you won’t eliminate as much liquid as you put in to your colon.
This is no cause for concern, however. It simply means that your colon absorbed the water from the enema because you needed it!
Proper hydration is necessary for EVERYTHING: skin health, energy levels, mental clarity, proper digestion and elimination, kidney health, and more.
So although coffee enemas aren’t a replacement for drinking enough fluids, a side benefit of doing them is that any re-absorption of water means you’re better hydrated!
4. Relief from Menstrual Pain & Fatigue
I get my period every month, just like you. And just yours, it’s not a walk in the park (yet, it is better than it used to be!).
Although cleaning up my diet and reducing environmental toxins in my life helped the pain and discomfort of my monthlies tremendously, I still experience cramps, body aches, and tiredness.
I don’t take Tylenol, Advil, Midol, or anything else for relief.
I discovered pretty quickly that coffee enemas are amazing, all-natural pain relief — along with The Best Period Drink Ever and this PMS Smoothie.
The pain-reducing qualities of coffee enemas were discovered during World War I. Legend has it that a nurse accidentally poured coffee instead of water into a patient’s enema. When she gave it to him, the pain from his injuries subsided (source).
Another story says that coffee enemas were used during the war when morphine was in short supply (source).
Either way, I can personally testify to a coffee enema’s ability to reduce pain, discomfort, and fatigue during my period.
5. Peace & Quiet
I think this one’s pretty self-explanatory. I mean, bathroom business isn’t exactly a public event — unless, of course, you have children under the age of 5 running around, in which case, I applaud you, salute you, pray for you, and advise you to do coffee enemas while your hubby’s at home. 😉
You don’t have to be on a specific healing protocol, such as Nutritional Balancing or the Gerson Therapy, to do or benefit from coffee enemas. And if you choose to do them, you get to be alone, in peace and quiet, for at least 20 minutes!
Who doesn’t love the thought of that?
I think coffee enemas are wonderfully relaxing.
You can reasonably do any activity that you would do whilst laying in bed: read a book, catch up on social media, close your eyes, listen to soft music.
I love to take my iPad into the bathroom with me and use the time to watch an episode of whatever show I’m into. (Right now, it’s Call the Midwife on Netflix!)
I need alone time every day so I can be the best version of myself. I am able to be a better wife and mommy if I get that time. It doesn’t have to be long spans of time — which is why a coffee enema is the ultimate multi-tasker.
I am actively detoxing my liver, gallbladder, and colon while getting that time alone ANDÂ staying hydrated AND keeping my skin clear AND getting relief from fatigue AND toning my pelvic floor muscles.
How cool is that?!
UPDATE
I stopped daily coffee enemas in June of 2017, after over 2 years. My naturopath and I determined this was the right choice for me at the time — and not because of any negative side effects of the coffee enemas. Even after daily enemas for over 2 years, my normal bowel function returned in just a few days.
The main purpose for my doing coffee enemas was as part of a Nutritional Balancing program and for liver detox. I am no longer doing NB. Furthermore, my ND and I are supporting my liver function and detox through Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, homeopathics, and methylated B vitamins.
Though I am no longer doing daily enemas, I try to do at least 2 per month — per my ND’s instructions.
I am so thankful for the 2 years that I did coffee enemas. I truly believe they saved my gallbladder, rid my body of lots of toxins and parasites, and made me slow down and have some quiet time to myself every day. And, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

Did you ever get sick when you first started doing these, due to the toxins leaving your body??
Definitely waves of nausea, but not sick. I never threw up. But the toxins exiting can be pretty intense.
Great information. I’ve been doing them for years for detox. for candida, mold, EMF toxicity, etc. I’m now 70 and can still get up and down on the bathroom floor. Keep up the good work everyone! There is a lot of good information out there.
Good for you, Lynne!
I have just started to daily coffee enemas as I go through the GAPS diet to try to get my body in healthy shape. My question is, should I be having BMs in addition to the enema or is it normal for them to stop outside of what happens during the enema? I know this is TMI but I really appreciate your help!
It is normal to have BMs while also doing coffee enemas, however I found that mine decreased and eventually went away outside of the enemas. I wasn’t too concerned about that, and when I would take breaks from enemas, my normal bowel function returned within a few days. I did 2 coffee enemas back-to-back as 1 session. So technically 2 per day, but not at 2 separate times. I just found that the back-to-back enemas worked really well for me. Not TMI! It’s ok!
Celine, who posted while back about mom giving enemas. My mom also gave us enemas. While I did not overly like getting one, I now know that was one of the best home remedies to give.
I recently found out about the coffee enema from a woman friend of mine who works in the health food store.
Getting a coffee enema is one of the best things I have done for my health.
Headaches gone. Skin improved. Eyes cleared up. and detoxes the liver.
Thanks for this wonderful article
I’ve been doing coffee enema’s (S.A Wilson’s) for about a year, only when I have a migraine (during my menses mostly). Initially it helped instantly but lately it doesn’t seem to be working quite as well. I’m not sure why. I have what I believe is “Menstrual Migraines” which are hormonal. I do sometime have them outside of my menses as well. The migraines are horrific in terms of pain and nausea. I’m a complete vegetable when I have them. Crying and looking for any non medicinal relief, which is why I do coffee enema’s. Overall, they are wonderful.
I’m in an Adrenal Fatigue Program right now. I have been super sick for a long time with migraines and tummy issues. They asked me to do coffee enemas and at first I was horrified. But I decided that if they are recommending them, that i should try them. Today is only the second day, but it isn’t as bad as it sounds. No pain and I feel so much more energy than I have feel for a long time.
YES! Sarah, you are SO right. Many people have asked me about coffee enemas and adrenal fatigue. Wouldn’t the caffeine be too much? Wouldn’t it cause further fatigue issues? I, too, struggled w/ adrenal insufficiency for a long time (sometimes I wonder if I still do!), but I believe that because the body isn’t actually digesting the coffee/caffeine, it doesn’t have a negative effect on the adrenals. I experienced the same boost of energy you describe!
Hi, I’ve been doing coffee enemas daily for the last 3 weeks and have loved them. The clean energy and mental clarity especially. For some reason they have stopped giving me that feeling of clean energy and mental clarity. I tried adding an extra tablespoon of coffee but it now just makes me jittery. Have you ever experienced this? I wonder if it’s because I no longer have toxins in my system? But it’s only been 3 weeks and I’m pretty sure my heavy metal burden is high. I use Cor-vital coffee made especially for enemas.
I’ve not experienced what you’re describing. Perhaps decrease the amount of coffee until you find a level that’s comfortable for you.
I personally have felt that jittery feeling you’re describing after doing a coffee enema. I notice that if I’m not watching the time and holding it longer than recommended, I could get jittery. Maybe too much is absorbed? Don’t know. However I do notice that eating a little something afterwards helps. Lile some okinawan sweet potato to fill me up just a bit. I don’t know why but it helps me. I do love using the coffee enemas though. Like others mentioned before it’s kinda like a lottle short get away. Like a short break in my day for “me… Read more »
This is a great article! I am new to the NB program. We just got our Hair Analysis back from the doctor and ordered our supplements. I am waiting for them in the mail. I started doing the coffee enemas about 4 weeks ago and I have to say that I love them. The symptoms you described on your “About Me” page is identical to mine. The coffee enemas have helped to relieve a lot of pain. I have also found them to be very relaxing and I now consider them to be “my time” away from the kids and… Read more »
Great article! A couple clarifying points: 1. People always say that the Gerson Therapy is illegal in the US. It definitely is not. There was a Gerson center, associated with the Gerson Institute, in Arizona, that was licensed and properly operated under the state laws there. There is still a (different) active one in Sedona, and while there are claims that it is “illegal” to treat cancer with other than accepted therapies, this isn’t true either; there are hundreds of clinics, doctors and even hospitals using all sorts of alternative treatments, including Gerson Therapy, all over the US. It is… Read more »
Lindsey thank you so much for sharing. I get terrible PMT migraines and wonder if u know of these enemas helping? My son is 14 and has terrible acne. Would u recommend it for either of us? Do I still do an emema while menstruating? TIA
Coffee enemas have always worked well to relieve my headaches and menstrual cramps. So, yes, you can do them while menstruating — just keep towels under yourself because it can get messy. 😉 If your 14yo son is open to the idea of doing coffee enemas, they can be beneficial for clearing up skin issues.
Hi! My mom used to give us enemas when we were children, but once we grew up we felt too awkward to let her to do it. Now that I’m 25 I have been thinking about going back to them because I want to protect my colon, and I think the benefits you listed are amazing. But I have questions about how often should I perform an enema and what should I eat afterwards. I remember my mom would only feed me fruit and water, which made me super hungry. Do I have to watch what I eat?
I just started doing coffee enemas. I try to aim for 2x per day after a bowel (holding for 15 minutes) movement/or when I remember or especially when I get off track with my diet..I was surprised to see the ezcema instantly respond to this treatment. . And also noticed the above mentioned side effects and it doesn’t interfere with my bowels..
That’s awesome! So glad you’re experiencing the good benefits of coffee enemas!
When doing this are you laying on your side in the bed or sitting on the potty?
Laying on my side to retain, then on the potty for the rest. 😉
