Why I Finally Started A Minimalist Skincare Routine At Age 35
Organic, natural, and “edible” skincare and makeup weren’t working for me. I needed high-performing, long-lasting, non-toxic, safer skincare. Even though I have very normal, boring skin, here’s why I *finally* started a minimalist skincare routine at age 35 and how it might help you, too!
For a decade, I’ve been…
- researching food and various holistic topics
- eating Real Food
- scrupulously reading ingredient lists on everything that came into our home — from shampoo to gluten-free crackers
- not vaccinating my kids because I don’t trust the lack of research on ingredients, efficacy, or injecting multiple viruses into a body without knowing what’s going to happen
- using organic, edible, and sometimes homemade makeup and skincare products
But the one thing I haven’t been doing?
Taking care of my skin.
Now, lest that statement cause you to believe that I have skin problems that have gone unaddressed, let me assure you: that is NOT the case.
I have very normal, very boring skin. It’s not oily, not dry, and not prone to acne or breakouts. In fact, my skin is so boring that I rarely get even one zit before or during my period.
I’ve never seen a dermatologist and have never had any real concerns about my skin.
Please, friends, know that I’m not saying all this to brag about my normal skin. I do realize how fortunate I am to have not struggled with acne, rosacea, eczema, redness, or other skin issues, especially on my face.
And, I am so thankful that my skin has not been a source of angst as it is for so many women and men. I’ve had other health challenges and concerns, just not of the skin sort.
So why write about skincare if I don’t have skin problems?
Why I Finally Started A Skincare Routine At Age 35
For most of the first half of my 30s — which has been a fabulous decade so far, by the way! — I was dealing with some health issues.
Hypothyroid and other hormone imbalances, anxiety, insomnia, constipation, inflammation, hypoglycemia, and weight gain were nearly constant struggles for a good part of my 30s (and the latter part of my 20s). Those issues didn’t affect my skin directly, thankfully, but the stress of those issues — coupled with the simple fact that I was getting older during that time — had long-term effects on my face.
Namely, those fine lines around my eyes, a few little dark age spots, and bits of redness popping up here and there.
Not to mention… my kids went from little babes to teenagers during that time, too. I’m surprised I haven’t found any grey hairs yet!
Guess what? Those are all really just signs of aging!
Now, I’ve resolved my health issues. That’s right, my hypothyroid is in remission, my anxiety is so much less and under control, I sleep like a champ, and I’ve lost 25 pounds — I’m 35 and ready to focus on taking care of my skin.
Beautiful, Youthful Skin Starts On The Inside
Ok, so before we go any further, I need to get a few things off my chest…
First, I believe skincare is more about what we’re putting IN our bodies and less about what we put ON our bodies.
A diet loaded with sugar, processed foods, and other crap will show on the skin, eventually, if it hasn’t already.
Thankfully, I have been taking care of my skin all these years just by eating Real Food, cutting sugar out of my life, and regularly consuming skin-healthy foods like:
- grass-fed collagen (Collagen production begins to decline in our 30s, resulting in those fine lines, less plump lips, and saggy eyes.)
- grass-fed gelatin (Same benefits as collagen, but is used to make gummies, marshmallows, jello, etc.)
- probiotics (Skin issues are extremely common in people with poor gut health.)
- nourishing, traditional fats (grass-fed butter, ghee, lard, coconut oil, MCT oil, avocado oil)
- leafy greens (lettuce, lightly steamed kale and spinach) and aquatic greens (seaweed, spirulina, chlorella)
- berries (super high in anti-aging antioxidants and skin-friendly Vitamin C)
^^By the way, if you’d like to purchase any of those linked items from my partner Perfect Supplements, you will save an additional 10% by using my readers-only discount code ALLTHETHINGS at checkout.
Consuming those foods on a daily basis is important, but so is cutting out foods that aren’t so skin-friendly, like…
- sugar — by far the biggest culprit! (I cut sugar but still enjoy desserts! Here’s how!)
- processed and improperly prepared grains, beans, and nuts (This includes boxed cereals, pasta, packaged foods, etc.)
- rancid fats (vegetable oils, margarine, shortening)
- any food that’s “healthy”, but you might be sensitive to (gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, etc.)
To sum it up, ALL skincare should start with what you’re putting IN your body.
No lotion, moisturizer, cream, serum, pill, supplement, or makeup can make your skin healthier than putting real, nutrient-dense foods into your body and avoiding processed “SAD” (Standard American Diet) food.
That said, I’d love to tell you about how I’m taking care of my skin from the outside, too. 😉
The Natural, Organic, & Even Edible Skincare & Makeup I Used Before
I’ve used lots of homemade and DIY makeup and skincare things over the years. I mean, isn’t that what you do when you fall down the Crunchy Rabbit Hole?
The truth? Most of them didn’t work effectively or stay put or do much of anything.
Then, I started looking into other options. I had tried several companies, like Orglamix, 100 Percent Pure, and others in the past. In fact, I was a loyal customer of some of those brands. I wanted organic, all-natural makeup… and I got it!
The problem? The makeup looked great once it was on, but it didn’t stay on. Especially the eyeshadows.
I finally got tired of wasting my money on makeup that didn’t stay put and time applying it.
So I quit.
My skincare “routine” was basically:
- splashing water on my face every morning
- applying lard and frankincense essential oil
- sometimes washing my face with soap in the shower
- wearing no makeup or just mascara
- wearing a full face of makeup on rare occasions
Not that any of that is “wrong”, but I decided I could practice a small act of self-care by stepping it up. Seeing as how I’m 35, I felt like that was the least I could do for myself!
An effective and minimalist skincare routine is a small way we can invest in ourselves each day. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time — 5 to 10 minutes total. (Hey, I’ve got better things to do than stare at myself in the mirror, ya know?)
Effective & Minimalist Skincare
Notice I said “effective”, not “organic” or “natural”. The makeup brands I used before were certainly organic and natural, but they weren’t super effective since they didn’t stay put! 😛
I know I’m aging — we all are — but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t age well.
So, here’s what I’m doing now that I’m 35 and serious about investing in my skin so it will look as young and healthy as possible for as long as possible…
I need high-performance skincare and lasting makeup (for the rare occasion when I wear it) that doesn’t contain toxic ingredients. I don’t care if it’s organic or edible, because in my experience, the organic, edible makeups and skincare regimens don’t perform!
Again, I’m done wasting time and money on products and DIYs that don’t work, don’t work as well as I hope, or don’t stay put.
I’ve known about the toxins in makeup and skincare for a loooooong time. That’s why I was using organic, edible, and/or DIY stuff for so long in the first place.
And, I don’t regret what I tried, used, and made on my own. I learned a ton, got to experiment with some cool products and ingredients, and definitely didn’t do any harm while I was on my quest to find the best!
But now? I’m over it.
I’m over the homemade eyeshadows with spirulina, the homemade blushes with beetroot powder, the homemade mascaras with activated charcoal and aloe, the homemade lotions that grow mold after a month. I’m also definitely done with the No-Poo Method!
My quest for the best in non-toxic, high-performing skincare led me to Beautycounter… and I’d love to tell you why!
What Is Beautycounter?
Beautycounter is a makeup and skincare company that is committed to high-performing, yet safe and non-toxic beauty products.
In fact, Beautycounter’s health and safety standards go well beyond what’s required by U.S. law. Ironically, I live in a country that regulates everything… yet the U.S. hasn’t passed a major federal law to regulate the ingredients used in the beauty industry since 1938.
Do you know how much has happened in the cosmetics industry in the last 70 years?!
Lots and lots of harmful toxins have found their way into our shampoo, lipstick, and foundation since then, and these toxins have long-lasting health consequences on our bodies. Companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgments about safety.
So, Beautycounter has prohibited over 1,500 toxic ingredients from being used in their products — find them on The Never List. They’re ahead of our own government when it comes to regulating the toxins and hormone-disrupting chemicals out of their products!
Furthermore, I was impressed that Beautycounter’s mission to provide safer skincare wasn’t clouded at all by their other mission to make high-performing skincare.
I think we’ve all been led to believe that, while natural/organic/non-toxic makeup and skincare is preferable, it will never perform as well as upscale department store brands (like Estee Lauder, Clinique, or Sephora).
Well, Beautycounter has proven that wrong on all fronts!
They’ve chosen the best organic, sustainable, natural, and synthetic ingredients with over 80% of ingredients being plant-derived. Plus, ALL ingredients are screened for hazards like cancer, hormone disruption, developmental toxicity, and infertility.
(Because, YES, the ingredients in our cosmetics industry have been proven to cause all of those things.)
Not only is Beautycounter making skincare safer, they’re also making it transparent. You can find a list of every ingredient used in every product on their website. That’s something bigger beauty companies can’t boast!
To recap, Beautycounter…
- is willingly banning unsafe ingredients from their products without waiting for the government to catch up
- has banned over 1,500 toxic chemicals and strictly controls the amounts allowed on 250 others (Find this on The Never List.)
- isn’t just a makeup company, it’s also an advocacy organization and is advocating on Capitol Hill for stricter regulations in the cosmetics and skincare industry
- produces safer, non-toxic, yet high-performing makeup, serums, moisturizers, acne treatments, and more
My Beautycounter Why
Like I said, I’m just done with low-performing skincare and makeup. I’m done wasting my money to buy them, and I’m done wasting my time to make them.
BUT, I want my skin to look young and be healthy, inside and out!
My skin looks and feels great right now, even at age 35. So, of course, I want to do all that I can to keep it that way for the rest of my 30s, and into my 40s and 50s!
So… a company with strict standards + my desire for high-performing, lasting, effective skincare…
= why I FINALLY started a skincare routine at age 35!
Let me tell you about it!
My Minimalist Skincare Routine Using Beautycounter
Notice that word “minimalist”?
That’s very important to me.
I have no desire to spend a lot of time on my skin, nor do I want my bathroom shelves and cabinets cluttered with 592 bottles, compacts, and brushes.
So, my basic, minimalist skincare routine really involves 4 Beautycounter skincare products and 1 Beautycounter makeup package (Flawless in Five).
I use Beautycounter’s Countersun Mineral Sunscreen, just a bit on my face every morning. It’s the only sunscreen that not only protects against UVB and UVA rays, it also protects the skin from blue light — the light emitted by TV, computer, and phone screens.
I spend quite a bit of time in front of a screen each day, and I love knowing that I’m protecting my skin this way.
This sunscreen is light and water-resistant, doesn’t smell, and doesn’t contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, chemicals which are known to disrupt coral reefs. It also doesn’t turn my skin pasty-white or leave a residue.
Once this summer, I even applied Countersun Mineral Sunscreen 3 days in a row without showering in between, and my skin STILL didn’t feel greasy or dirty at all.
I love, love, LOVE it and use it on the kids, too!
Right after sunscreen comes this miracle in a bottle. It is so light and has a pleasant, but faint, citrus-y scent.
Remember how I said I noticed some small, dark age spots on my face? I specifically wanted to try this to see if it would help lighten them… and it did!
This brightening oil even won Allure Magazine’s 2017 Best of Beauty Award!
This goes on next. I’d never used moisturizer on my face before, so I was a bit concerned that it would cause me to break out or my skin to look shiny. Neither happened!
It’s light but insanely moisturizing. Actually, it feels like rubbing soft silk on my face! 🙂
If I wash my face at night, I apply it again. 2 pumps is plenty to cover my entire face, neck, and part of my chest. (<– Notice I said, “if I wash my face at night”… I don’t always, and I’m ok with that!)
In an independent consumer study, after two weeks of use:
- 93% said it provides instant and long-lasting hydration
- 93% noticed skin feels smoother
- 90% said skin looks and feels healthier
I can verify that all of the above is true, and my results have been similar. Learn more about this silky moisture lotion.
This is actually the very first Beautycounter product I tried… because I won it in a giveaway! And now? I can’t imagine life without it. 🙂 Seriously.
If I could recommend just ONE thing from Beautycounter for the harshest skeptic to try, it would be this eye cream. I literally feel like my eyes are more open after I apply it!
Also, you use so little that one jar will last months and months. In fact, my husband and I have both been using this eye cream for over 2 months, and we haven’t even come close to using half of it!
Made with protective jambu extract and skin-conditioning wild algae and caffeine, it diminishes the appearance of fine lines and reduces puffiness.
Consumer Panel Test Results: 89% of women reported under-eye puffiness was reduced and fine lines were diminished. (Results based on independent, 8-week, 28-subject, single-blind clinical and consumer perception study.)
#5 — Flawless In Five
And last… if I’m wearing makeup (not daily), I love the minimalist concept of Beautycounter’s Flawless in Five.
With 6 safer, high-performing makeup products, it takes just 5 minutes to put on my makeup! Flawless in Five includes…
- Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation
- Touchup Skin Concealer Pen
- Color Define Brow Pencil
- Satin Powder Blush
- Lip Gloss (<– my FAVORITE lip gloss evah!)
I love buying things in kits, and this kit definitely did not disappoint. I’m not into crazy makeup techniques, smokey eyes, eyeliner, or any of that stuff. It’s just too fussy for me.
So this basic, minimalist set was exactly what I needed! (Although I do love that lip gloss a whole lot and often put it on without wearing any other makeup.)
After using Beautycounter products for a couple of months, I’m honestly blown away at how high-performing and long-lasting the skincare and makeup are.
Much more high-performing and long-lasting than the expensive brands and DIY stuff I was previously using. Actually, the Beautycounter’s price point is nearly the same as those companies, but I’m getting better products, in my opinion.
Overall, my face is less red, age spots are lighter, and my skin feels more supple and even healthier than before!
I even joined Beautycounter as a consultant so I could save 25% on all my orders because I’ve finally found the skincare I’ve been looking for!
