How To Do Trim Healthy Mama At Chipotle: The S Meal
Eating out is a real treat for us.
Since we live 65 miles from everything but burger joints, and since Mexican-style foods are our favorite, our go-to place when we do eat out is Chipotle.
We believe in Chipotle’s mission to bring their customers “Food With Integrity“.
Chipotle is standing against pesticide-ridden produce, GMOs, and CAFO-raised cows, chickens, and pigs to bring us food that’s not only really tasty, it’s also something I feel good about buying and eating.
And since The Hubs and I happen to be doing Trim Healthy Mama right now, Chipotle also happens to offer the perfect Satisfying (S) meals! This means we can stay on plan, while eating nutritious foods that are prepared quickly and are very reasonably priced.
Here’s How To Do Trim Healthy Mama At Chipotle
It’s not hard at all to stay totally on plan and be a Trim Healthy Mama at Chipotle!
#1 — Say YES to a bowl; NO to the burrito.
#2 — Say YES to the lettuce, if that’s your thing.
Or if you’re attempting a Deep S meal out, say YES to the lettuce.
I actually don’t like the texture of Chipotle’s lettuce (too many little stems to pick out), so I say NO to this ingredient.
#3 –Say NO to beans and rice.
The carbs in both types of rice (white and brown) and both types of beans (pinto and black) exceed the 5g of carbs allowed in an S meal.
#4 — Say YES to the meat, and make it a double.
Since protein is always the focus of every THM meal, it’s super easy and interesting to eat Trim Healthy Mama at Chipotle.
For a minimal upcharge, you can order double meat. AND you can get 2 types of meat, if you want to make it really interesting.
Chipotle has spicier offerings — barbacoa and steak — and milder offerings — carnitas and chicken. They also have Sofritas, but that’s tofu, so please say NO to that one.
#5 — Say YES to the grilled peppers and onions.
But don’t go too crazy…
Onions do have some carbs, so one small spoonful is all you need.
#6 — Say NO to the corn salsa.
Again…carbs. Not allowed on this S meal.
#7 — Say YES to the salsa!
All of ’em, if that’s what you like!
Chipotle offers 3 salsas:
- a chunky and mild pico de gallo with 1g carb per serving
- a medium tomatillo-green chili salsa with 4g carbs per serving
- a tomatillo-red chili salsa with 4g carbs per serving
#8 — Say YES to sour cream and cheese.
…unless you’re avoiding dairy, of course. (If you’re going for the Deep S meal here, you’ll also want to say NO to the sour cream and cheese.)
Chipotle sources their sour cream and cheese from pastured cows, so it’s high quality stuff. And boy, does it taste good!
Since THM allows us to enjoy our dairy in moderation, now’s the time to make your Trim Healthy Mama at Chipotle count for some yummy, pastured sour cream and cheese!!!
Or say NO to the sour cream and cheese and …
#9 — Say YES to the guac…
…if you want to pay a $1.95 upcharge. I actually skip Chipotle’s guac because I don’t like the chunks of tomatoes and onions in it. (I’m sensitive to textures, ok?) I also just don’t think it tastes awesome, but I have friends who swear it’s the best guac ever.
If you say YES to the guac, ask for a smaller spoonful. Most restaurants are stingy with their guac, but NOT Chipotle. They definitely give you a honkin’ spoonful and you’ll get your money’s worth on that upcharge. But since you’re already doing the cheese and sour cream, take it easy here.
#10 — Say YES to cilantro!
It’s not on their food line, but they have it — and LOTS of it!
I love cilantro with all my heart. It’s my favorite green thing to eat ever. And if you tell them you want cilantro, they’ll send someone back to the kitchen to bring you a whole container of it.
I have them dump that cilantro straight onto my bowl so I can scoop some up with every bite.
#11 — Say NO to the chips and salsa.
I hate to break your heart, but you knew this was coming, right?
Chips are NOT THM-friendly, unfortunately. And Sweet Judy, does Chipotle have some gooooooood chips. 🙁
#12 — Say NO to the soft drinks…
And order a water or get an unsweet iced tea instead.
I always have my bottle of NuNaturals Stevia with me, so I can sweeten it myself.
Here’s what my THM:S bowl looks like:
Double meat: chicken + barbacoa, hot red salsa, sour cream, cheese, and cilantro. Yummmmmm!
That meal, plus an unsweet tea, costs me $11.75 + tax. If I didn’t order double meat, my total would be $8.60 + tax.
Not a bad way to eat out, stay on plan, have healthy food, and stay on a budget!
