Non-Toxic “Red Alert” Period Emergency Kit {for teens!}
Maybe you were sitting in your 7th grade math class when it happened… You started your period and had NOTHING with you. Put together a natural, non-toxic period emergency kit with your pre-teen or teenage daughter so she always has what she needs to clean up, get natural pain relief, and move on with her day!
Maybe you were…
…sitting in your 7th grade math class.
…at softball, band, or cheerleading practice.
…stepping on to the school bus.
…at your best friends’ sleepover.
And it happened.
You started your period.
If you were anything like I was in middle school and high school, you were unprepared. Best-case scenario: your friends raided their lockers to help you out. Worst-case scenario: your male coach had to open his desk drawer and give you the only (very old) tampon he had.
We want to avoid that for our daughters, right, Mommas?
Non-Toxic “Red Alert” Period Emergency Kit For Teens
When nature happens, you sure don’t want to be left in a gas station or school bathroom with nothing but the tampon vending machine on the wall (ewwwww). However, if you’re unprepared, that might be your only option.
Save your daughter from that hopeless feeling by arming her with her very own Non-Toxic “Red Alert” Period Emergency Kit! Then, she can take it with her and never have to resort to a thin, itchy pad from a vending machine or wear her sweater around her waist all day long.
Although we’ve created a natural and non-toxic period emergency kit that’s specifically for my daughter, every girl should customize hers to suit her needs. For instance, I use a menstrual cup, but my daughter does not; so, she would not have a menstrual cup in her emergency period kit. Making a “Red Alert” Kit together is a great mother-daughter activity!
Ideally, you and your daughter should prepare her kit before she starts menstruating. That way, she has more than toilet paper to wad up and stuff in her undies. (Worst. Feeling. Ever.)
If you’re wondering how to start those conversations with your daughter, read Conversations, Preparations, & Ideas To Celebrate Your Daughter’s First Cycle for more info!
So, once your girls know what’s happening and how to get ready for it, they need actual, tangible things so they’re really ready! Because, as we know all too well, we don’t get to decide when our cycles start, do we, Mommas?
Your daughter’s kit goes wherever she goes — in her backpack or purse, to school, to the gym, sleepovers, field trips, sporting events, and more!
Here’s what’s inside my daughter’s Natural Girl’s “Red Alert” Period Emergency Kit for teens…
#1 — The Bag
We love the Planet Wise Travel Wet/Dry Bag! This bag is SO cute and practical!
It has 2 pockets — one for clean, dry pads and one for used pads or dirty undies. And, your daughter can choose her favorite print because they have LOTS of adorable options!
#2 — Extra Undies
Unless you or your daughter’s cycles start with just a small amount of spotting, extra underoos are the first thing that need to go in your kit!
If you can, rinse out your stained undies and put them in the wet pocket of your bag. Can’t figure out a way to rinse them discreetly? Just put them straight into the wet pocket of your bag. That bag is washable, too!
#3 — Extra Flow Catchers
I use the term “flow catchers” so you don’t feel pressured to use one product (like a menstrual cup) over another (like reusable pads). And an extra flow catcher is just as necessary as extra undies, so make sure it goes in your emergency kit!
Since this is an emergency kit, only one extra cup, pad, period panties, etc. is necessary, so it shouldn’t take up too much room. Here are the washable pads we use, and here is the menstrual cup I use.
#4 — Wipes In A Ziploc Bag
Whether you’re super natural and have homemade wipes or you just buy the most natural ones you can find, it’s a good fantastic idea to have one or two. For obvious reasons. 😉
The zip-top bag can also be useful to hold stained undies or used pads!
#5 — Mag Phos
Just because Aunt Flo arrived while your daughter was on a field trip doesn’t mean she’s going to take it easy. Sometimes the worst cramps are the ones we get right after our cycles start. And when you’re a crunchy family, you don’t keep Midol in your medicine cabinet, do you? 😉
Best to be prepared with natural, emergency pain management! Like Mag Phos, a homeopathic cell salt for muscle cramps!
You could fit the whole bottle of Mag Phos in your Red Alert Kit because it’s a really small bottle. It’s easy to take, too — just dissolve 3 to 5 under the tongue.
#6 — Cramp-Relieving Essential Oil Roll-On
Again, cramps. They’re the pits.
Peppermint essential oil is so effective and soothing! So that your daughter isn’t carrying around a entire bottle of peppermint oil, why not make her a cramp-relieving roll-on?
Using a roller bottle, some peppermint oil, and carrier oil, you can make a roll-on for your daughter’s Red Alert Kit.
Add 30 drops peppermint oil to the roller bottle and fill with a carrier oil. (<— my coupon code DIETZVILLE will save you 10% on any oil, roller bottle, or carrier oil purchase from Spark Naturals!)
Or, try this No-More-Cramps! Essential Oil Roll-On.
She can apply it for cramps as often as needed!
#7 — Chocolate
My girl and I are choco-holics… and when we’re cycling? You best not get in between me and my Fair Trade chocolate!
While researching to write this post, I came across so many period survival kits that had bags of M&Ms and Hershey bars. Ummmmm….. no, thank you. Sure, we need chocolate, but we don’t need all the sugar and additives of commercial candy!
Why not send a little bit of comfort and home in your daughter’s Red Alert Period Emergency Kit? We love these mini Equal Exchange chocolates! Put one or two in the Red Alert Kit so your daughter has much-needed chocolate wherever she is. It doesn’t have to be chocolate if she has another healthy treat she loves!
Here are 19 Fair Trade chocolate options — many of which would go perfectly in a non-toxic period emergency kit!

Thank you so much, for making this post!!! I am a big fan of my period cup. I love that you choose mag phos…. I didn’t know about them. I am making my daughter a start kit… or a welcome to womanhood and I am including raspberry tea. We are also giving her a steeper of her favorite animal.(hippo) 🙂 <3 Way to be an awesome momma!!!
Love that you’re adding raspberry leaf tea! These kits are so fun and special!
Menstrual cups, resuble pads, washable pads – Uhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm NO, NO, NO, and NO. That all needs to go to the trash immediately!!! Ewwwwwwwwwww!!! Always and Stayfree thin pads are the best things to use. Roll them up when you change them in the wrapper for the new clean pad, and then roll everything in toilet paper, and then throw the whole thing, away.
Hi Rachel, you are clearly coming from a different perspective when it comes to menstrual products. The products you mention are loaded with fibers that have been shown to cause irritation to the vagina, as well as being made from GMO-cotton which contains the harmful chemical, glyphosate. The women who are reading my blog, for the most part, are looking for natural, non-chemical, and organic options.
I have never heard of mag phos before. Good to know and will pass on to my girls who have girls:)
Love it! I’ll be making one of these. Thanks, Lindsey.
I’m so glad this is helpful to you, Kris!
Great post filled with very helpful ideas. Herbal medicine offers a number of possible formulas that can also be helpful for mood swings, painful cramps, irritability. Maybe I’d add a combination formula with a strong anti-spasmodic to ease cramping and help with comfort. Let me know if you want me to put one together for you Lindsey. Perhaps it’s covered with the homeopathic. Just sharing. xo
Great post Lindsey! Sharing with my daughter, she will love it too. Esp the Mag Phos, we’ll be looking for that for sure so thanks!
And thank YOU for the title suggestion! 😉
Chocolate…. yessssss. My girls are a few years from this, but I could use one myself. Haha.
Well, then make one, Momma (once that baby comes, of course)!
So I totally never even thought of this! I have to super young girls so no need (yet) but what a fantastic idea!
I hope you’ll tuck it away for when you do!
Seriously wish I had this when I was that age. It was terrifying getting my period in school for the first time 🙁 This is an amazing and necessary post!
Awww! You can do better for your daughter!
