Frozen Berry Kebabs: A Summer Snack Kids Can Make Themselves!
If my kids want me to turn them loose in the kitchen on a hot day, I have just 2 requirements:
Don’t heat up the house. And clean up your mess.
Luckily, this summer snack kids can make themselves meets both requirements.
The kids can do all the prep work themselves — washing berries, setting out skewers, even transferring to the freezer. We even had our 3-year-old friend Alma over for an afternoon of berry kebab-making.
All 3 kiddos poked berries to their heart’s delight, even little Alma, who took her job very seriously.
Now, these berry kebabs are perfectly fine without the freezing… BUT when the heat is on, there’s nothing quite like munching on something cold and sweet to take the edge off.
This is boredom-busting activity + snack-making in one cute package. All I had to do was stand back and snap some photos so you guys could see that kids of all ages and skill levels can have a blast creating their own summer snacks!
Summer Berry Kebabs: A Summer Snack Kids Can Make Themselves!
Here’s what you need:
- an assortment of berries (we used 1/2 a pint of blueberries, 1/2 a pound of strawberries, and 1 pint of blackberries)
- a paring knife and cutting board
- wooden skewers
- a cookie sheet
- parchment paper
Here’s how to do it:
First, wash all the berries and divide them into separate bowls. If you have an older child who knows how to safely use a paring knife, he or she can cut the stem out of the strawberries, then cut them in half. If you don’t have a child with knife skills, you can do this part for them.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Lay the berries and skewers out so that the children have easy access to everything. Then turn ’em loose! (You will need to show younger children how to poke the skewer through the berries without poking themselves. Alma was a quick study and didn’t poke herself once!)
Let them choose which berries they want on their skewers. This is also a fantastic opportunity to work on patterns with the littles. 🙂
Once the kids have made as many skewers as they like (or when they run out of berries), lay them on the parchment-lined cookie sheet and transfer to the freezer. Let them freeze completely before removing, about 6 hours.
Give this a try with other fruits too! Grapes and/or melon balls would make great additions!
